I am adding a screen porch to the gable end of my house. The roof of the porch will fall several feet below the house roof. I will be using scissors trusses for the porch. My house has hardboard siding over Celotex. I assume I need to cut out the siding where the truss fits against the house wall. Do I need to swap plywood for Celotex in that area also? Do I need to lag bolt the truss to the studs or just nail? How much above the truss do I cut to allow for the sheathing and roofing? And If I only cut away enough to allow for the thickness of sheathing and roofing, how do I get the step flashing in there ?

Hi Skip,
Although I don't have a lot of experience with Insulated sheathing board (Celotex)I think you might need to replace it with plywood since you won't have good nailing for the ends of your siding that fall in between the studs. If this is the case then you will have to remove the siding up to the top of your ridge and then the rest of your questions are mute since you will be residing. Make sure that the first step flashing on each side is applied over the siding so that the water is kicked out. Also install a new paper (i prefer 15lbs. felt in step flashing situation) and insure that the existing paper above overlaps it. If you reuse the old siding caulk or putty any old nail holes and try not to reuse any of the old nail holes either, the hole will probably be enlarged an could be an entry point for water.
Lastly I must take exception with FredL on keeping the siding that far away. You just need to keep the siding ablout 1/2 to 3/8 inch above the roofing material so that it doesn't wick up any water. Good Luck
*Fred,Your photo seams to show vinyl with a Jchanel at the roof line. When I run into this situation, I make a Jchanel with a lip running up past the step flashing so I don't have to put nails through the steps. I typically run the chanel about 1/2" above the high ridges of the shingles and in a straight line. For starters I don't like hardboard but if I had this situation, I would hold the siding up 1" max. It's going to draw water through the cut edge anyway sooner or later and 2" just looks tacky to me.
