Do modern surveyors have a hi-tech way to get around a tree in the way? I can’t imagine that surveyors would haul a transit around a tree by moving it laterally x feet, forward y feet, and back laterally x feet each time that they run into a tree. It would seem that there should be a gizmo (like a framed set of angled mirrors) that wraps around the tree trunk to maintain the proper direction.

Lazer beams.
REMEMBER THE BOSTON BATWANGER.
They order the X-ray specs from the back of the Superman comics <G>
I asked a surveyor that question once.
They simply triangulate around the obstructions and use trigonometry to adjust for going off on an angle.
When he did my property he simply cut the offending trees down. I came after the job was done to find at least two largesh trees down because they were in the way.
The also may be able to use super accutate GPS systems.
Paul: Don't let these Cretins jerk your chain!!! Surveyors ignore trees. They find a decent, long path that they can see along, perhaps cutting brush w/ a machete. The pins (nails) they put in have no real relationship to the corners of your lot, but their computer knows exactly where they are. They run a closed traverse around the property to establish known points (that are somewhere near the corners you need), where they put nails. Then they run shots to the appropriate corners & locate them. You should pay the freight for permnently installed pins at the lot corners. If you can, get someone to walk the traverse w/ you so you can see where the nails are that they used for their survey. The closed traverse they run is tied into some known points in the county land lot system so they can precisely tie your land into all the rest of the surveyed land around it.
Surveying is fun - if you enjoy misery, ticks, chiggers, poison ivy, sunburn & aching backs. There is also the thrill of facing down several varieties of venomous pit vipers in their native habitat. (see a post by Brownbagg from a bit more than a month ago when he dragged a rattler out by its fangs that were embedded in his snake proof chaps)

I don't know if an axe is high tech, but they are awful handy for seeing through trees.
