For an attic in North East (Long Island), how much cellulose should be blown in? If cellulose R-factor of 3.7 per inch, is 12 inches enough (R44.4)? Is 15 inches or R55.5 overkill with diminished returns?
BTW, all airsealing has been done. Walls will also be insulated with cellulose.
TIA,
Phil

Phil,
I live on Long Island. I have 20 inches of cellulose in my attic. The oil company doesn't like me.
Go by number of pounds of cellulose per square foot NOT installed thickness. It will settle some. The bags have a chart of coverage for a given R value make sure enough bags are installed to get the R value that you are paying for. 25% more product should NOT cost you 25% more $. By the way, who is the installer? Cellulose is not well known out here but is more often than not the best insulation choice.

*Ron,I haven't picked an installer yet. Only found two so far. Who did you use?Phil
*If it is a simple attic you can toss the bags up there, cut 'em open and spread the stuff around with a leaf rake!! If it is three stories up you'll probably want the blower, unless you've got a bunch of teenage kids hanging around to haul the bags up.If the attic is open and easily manuevered in, running the blower is about as involved as watering the lawn. Except you need a person to dump bags in the thing.-Rob
*Phil, Ron,I'm also on LI and want to do the attic next month. I was wondering if either of you checked for a source for rental blowers?Jerry
*Jeff at All Season is good. I haven't heard of any rental blowers since HD stopped selling cellulose.
*The late Hechinger's loaned a blower with any purchase of cellulose. A nearby rental center had one left over from WWII. Further research will doubtlessly turn up more...For an attic, you could just do it manually & kick the stuff around. In a pinch.
*Ron,Yeah, and I can't seem to get a reason why they don't sell cellulose around here! Do you know why? Phil
*Jerry,I haven't checked except at HD. But I havent even found stocking sellers of the stuff either.I'll keep looking. Almost ready for insulating now.Phil
