Out wandering the Virginia countryside, looking for a place to call home. We drove by this place a little northeast of Richmond (a little north of Mechanicsville in Hanover County) and I had to go back for a picture. It’s actually a monument to a very old church. Originally built about 1800 or so, burned during the Civil War, and the ‘daughters of the church’ or some such group erected this several years ago. Kind of freaky seeing it in the woods as you’re driving by.
I told DW we ought to buy the place. I could call in a few friends from BT and we could have it dried in and livable in a long weekend. Shouldn’t cost more than $25 a foot.

Love it. Got a VSH #?
Was out on 33 near top of the Blue Ridge yesterday, evaluating a crawler for a friend (who bought it). Asked about the Realtor signs around, thinking it was acreage for sale. Nope, subdivision from more than a few yrs ago with lots ranging from 1 acre, starting at about $10k. Was shocked to hear of land that cheap around here. Very few houses.
Look around and you'll occasionally find whole churches for sale, but that one would be considerably less work. Good luck with your search. Watch for designated historic areas.

tex, you gotta think souther red-neck here... you can have that place dried in and "livable" with a few blue tarps and a roll of duct-tape
you want to get all fancy... use silver tarps to reflect the sun and that new gorilla tape to ensure the best seal possible.
Yeah, blue tarps. Then Brownbag and JasonP would feel right at home.

What would you do with it ?

I was being sarcastic. She wants a new house in picture-perfect condition. I would be happy to get something structurally sound, and make cosmetic (and maybe a few light remodeling) changes. The joke between us is the same as with many of you: "No problem honey, I can do that myself for less money and faster than trying to contract it out."

you do remember the story about the cobbler and his kids right?
My wife is still waiting for the bed frame I have 90% complete that was supposed to be a wedding gift.
BTDT. But it sounds like Brother Mooney doesn't have that problem at home.

Whats the deal Ed, you planning on leaving the great state of Texas? Or have you already left?

Not what I meant .
Ive got plenty of unfinished projects.
We dont joke [any more] when we talk about buying real estate .
One time I took her to see a real mess and she said theres no way but I bought it .
Another time I showed her a house that was eaten up with termites on the front portion of it and she played the same act . I brought it home too.
Last one I was tryin to buy one too cheap and she said I was wasting my time . I should be working and making money so I went with out her . I called her and asked if she wanted to see her house I just bought and she didnt believe me till I brought the papers to her office.
Tim
Tell her to get used to not having the bed!
I started one for my wife and I when we got hitched about 5 1/2 years ago, still siting there undone, probably will be for another 5 1/2 years!
I had a son that got married two weeks ago, built him a walnut and tiger maple bed for his wedding gift, only took a couple weeks at part tiime, dont know how the hell that happened.

There is no good reason mine isn't done.
All that is left is to bore the holes for the side rail bolts and mount the cleats for the box spring to the side rails. Then I need to final sand and finish.
The finishing is probably the reason I've not worked on it, I'm not really looking forward to it.
The sample I did looked great but it was a long process, first a coat of Early American stain, then a coat of shellac to seal, then a coat of Ebony gel stain to fill the pores in the oak nice and black, then several more coats of finish.....
The headboard and foot board are Mission/Arts & Crafts style, it's going to be a PITA, but I need to get over with.
Theres always that first year aniversary present to shot for!
but it's coming so soon...
LOL, get off the net!
I say that with more projects going on than I can handle, while sitting here at the computer!
