How prevent cedar shingles from fading?

mcguire | Posted in General Discussion on March 7, 2007 04:16am

I recently saw an upscale builder in my area who surfaced a new home exterior with cedar shingles and has told the owner the color will not fade.

If true, what he is doing special to prevent fading?  I like the present look!

he was blowing smoke on the shingles  just like he was blowing smoke on the homeowner

all wood siding will change color.... greatly & soon

all stained wood siding will change color...  in a couple years

all painted wood siding will change color... maybe as long as  say 10 years

if you like a certain shade... you should order your shingles factory dipped to that shade... that is the best bet..then be prepared to restain them in 4-5 years

if he used a clear finish.. then they are still going to "fade" or get darker , or get blotchy.. they are wood  and they will react to water &  sun ...

also  different exposures  ( north ,south, east , west )  will all color differently.... and different exposures on the same side  will color differently  ( under the eaves , in the shade , will be different that the middle of the wall & the ones in the splash zone at the base of the wall  will be different

the only way i know to get cedar shingles to stay the color you like is to stain them the color you want, and  then renew the satin periodically

      Mike Smith,

You're right of course, but I could play the devils advocate here and say that if he left them fade naturally to grey and was able to keep most moisture off them due to good overhangs and a close monitering of sprinkers to prevent spraying the walls.

Well awefully weak but at least it's something..

That builder could do well in stand up comedy.

Frenchy could be his straight man.

      Piffan,

I said it was weak..  and I agreed with Mike.  Please don't put me in with the builder..

I didn't appoint you his booking agent - just his STRAIGHT MAN;)

Fading is prevented by keeping the shingles inside the house, and away from any windows that might expose them to sunlight.

Your closets might be a good place to enjoy the look.

That "upscale" builder sounds like a real downmarket charlatan to me.  In the wild west of the 1880s, he would have been selling snake oil.

Maybe he plans to pressure wash them once a month as part of a high end maintenance contract..."War is God's way of teaching Americans geography."  Ambrose Bierce

put the place on a lazy susan...

that'll make it easier to keep them out of the sun..Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming<!----><!----><!---->

Maybe they were concrete cedar look-a-like shingles or some composite cedar look-a-like material??
