What is the proper way to drain water from a water softner? I live in an area with well/septic systems and have a water softner. The installer just wanted to have the softner drain its water (about 90 gal every 3 days) into my septic system. I had heard that the salt water from the backwash process will shorten the life of the spetic system substantially. The soil surrounding the house is clay and does not drain well. What would be the best thing to do with all the water? Thanks – Tom

Good question! I've the same situation here for the past five years. Although our softener works on the hot water side only and cycles once a week. No problems. The fruit trees around the septic field are doing just fine. Let's here from some others.

*Ours drains into the septic (for 20 years now). I can't say I've noticed any problems. Of course, the leach field only lasted about 17 years or so, and had to be redone. Hmmmm....Rich Beckman
