I’m looking to get a peice of pipe (probably 1″- 1.5″) under a paved surface about 25′ wide. Once I get it under, I’ll be pulling a piece of 3/4″ tubing through. Some of my buds have suggested either pounding the pipe through, or hooking a hose to it and using the water to jet it through while pushing the pipe. Anybody ever done this? Any tips?

Get a horizoltal drilling company to come in and do it, my neigbor did so to pass sprinkler pipe under his driveway. one hour and they were done. Don't forget to call the dig line to mark utilities no matter what you do also if this is a public road you could be heading for trouble if you take it on your self.

I was able to do this under a two-lane State Highway ( shhhh ! ) several years ago. 2 inch PVC pipe. I dug a deep pit well off the shoulder of the road and cut in with a pair of post hole diggers. I started the pipe and washed out with a water hose inserted into the pipe, pounding with a sledge hammer on a 2 x 4. I'd wash a little, then pound in about a foot, wash and pound. It went rather quickly.
When the pipe was far enough past the shoulder for another hole, I dug down for it. It had dropped about 24" as it cleared the 24 feet. I was able to run #4 aluminum wire from a power pole to my barn.
You should be able to tell in the first 6 feet whether you'll have luck or have to call in the pros. Good luck.
Greg.
My plumber used a combination drill with water, I assume more to remove waste than to cut. Drill used pipe in 5 ft sections. It wasn't that big, maybe 10A, like an oversized hole hawg. They did 30 ft in less than 2 hrs to put in a water line.
It's really quite simple. Follow the instructions as Greg said.
I recently did a 4" sch 80 PVC under a 25' concrete drive. Line things up well and make sure you don't push the garden hose too far before pounding the pipe in further. Your only real difficulty would be running into a buried stump, board, stone, etc.
What is the small tube going to be used for? Fluids? Conduit? Depending on what, the galv pipe may be an overkill. Although the extra capacity could offer value sometime in the future.
You'll be surprised how fast this job goes.
Assuming the paved surface is a driveway or such.
you can do it with water, but it will mess up the base material under the road then the county start coming looking for you. If you own the road , yes with water. if its a public county road. get a drilling company.
I agree get a drilling company if you don't own the road.
In my area we have dirt alleys behind the house in the older part of town where the utilities are placed. If you need to replace a sewer line you must get a dig permit from the county and post a bond for the portion that runs under the alley, to insure you do it right and put things back. Needless to say most people stop at the property line and leave the alley portion as is unless it is collapased because of the cost and hassle.
If you are dealing with a public road you must get with the ruling authority to get their requirements as to how deep etc. Using the water method could leave a bit of a sink hole.
The 18 wheeler with the D-8 Cat comes down the road the surface give the FORD Explosion with eight soccer kids follows the van runs off the road, kids hurt their insurance find out you ran a pipe without permits! I would not want to be there!
