How to remove gray color from neglected deck railing.

Just bought a cabin with a deck that is about 15 years old. The log railing and posts have probably never been coated. It is very gray but seems to be sound (not rotten). Is there a way to chemically treat the logs to remove the gray so we can stain them. THanks.

There are several "deck cleaners" on the market. "Dekswood" (by Flood, I think) used to be a good one, but I haven't seen it recently.
But any of these will work by dissolving away the weathered wood, leaving a rougher surface than before.
Use a deck wash then a wood brightener, the rails will look almost new.
The active ingredient you're looking for is oxalic acid. Buy a concentrate and dilute it to about half the mix that they recommend. Stay away from the premixed stuff by Thompson...it's utterly useless.
