How to repair cracks in drywall cathedral ceiling?
I’m looking for recommendations on how to best repair cracking drywall in my cathedral ceiling. I have a hip roof cathedral ceiling that continues to crack at the hip rafters and ridge board. I understand that the wood framing is moving due to thermal expansion & contraction but thought that 2 x 12 framing with R-38 insulation would help eliminate this issue. I was wrong! I have had subcontractors either recommended specialty corner bead (Trim-Tex Magic Corner) or to trim the seams with molding (caulk molding to drywall). What would be your recommendation to eliminate this issue for the long term?

We luckily haven’t had that problem. However, after retirement I was called to a job we did not do. Same problem you have. Dave the magician offered the magic corner idea but here’s what he has done with good success over the years. Your job is hung so it won’t help you now. Float the last foot or so of all the board. Similar to what’s done with clear span trusses. No fasteners then the magic corner or similar.
Give Trimtex a call, maybe they’ve got a decent answer and best of luck.
Retirement-suggestions sans responsibility. Can’t get there soon enough!
Thanks for the recommendation. I agree that I would need to float out the existing board before any new bead was applied. Just not sure if Trim-Tex or equivalent is the best solution. Thanks for your input.
