Ok, I’ll admit it, I suck with computers. Can somebody tell me how I can reduce the file size on a couple of pictures that I have? I want to post them but they’re huge.
What program to use….? I don’t have photoshop either.
Thankx

Very simple, or I couldn't.
PAHS Designer/Builder- Bury it!
If you have microsoft windows XP you can open up the file, then up at the top of the screen you will see "edit pictures", click on that. When you click on that, it will open a side menu to the right, at the bottom of that side menu you will see "compress pictures", click on that. That will open a menu that will give you options for what you want the file for. When you click on one of the circles, at the bottom it will show you the current file size and what the file size would be with your compression choice. When you are satified with what compression size you have chosen, click on the white buttom at the very bottom of the side menu (on mine, you only see the top half of the button, cannot see the label). When you click on that the file will be resized and you can post it.
If you don't want that file to be permanently resized, save the file under a different name (a copy of the original) then make the compression on that one, thats what I usually do because I what the quality of the original in my files.
It depends on what photo-editor you are using. The Irfanview that VaTom mentions is popular here at BT (I don't have it, but a lot of the boys do). That's a freeware download, I understand.
I use the program that came with my scanner. It's fairly basic (I can't distort or fake-in photos the way the fancier ones can) but it allows me to resize the pic--which is the first level of attack to reducing file size--and to determine the quality of the image.
Say you've uploaded a bunch of digital photos from your camera to your computer. Now you open the IMAGES file and hover over a thumbnail. A mini popup window will give you data on that photo file including date and time taken, physical size (x pixels by x pixels, usually), and file size (# of kilobytes).
Open the photo in your editing program (a double click will usually do this or you can right click and then select 'open with' to specify the program you want to open the photo). There should be a main menu dropdown or toolbar icon which will allow you to re-size the photograph from, say 1600x1200 pixels (full format on a 2 megapixel camera) to whatever you want. For BT, 450 x 350 or thereabouts is gonna get you down near 100kb if you save the re-sized pic at the maximum quality level.
But to reduce the file size further, you need to reduce the reproduction quality...which for viewing on the screen is no big deal, cause all you can really see is about 72dpi (dots per inch) on the screen. So you need to find out if you must pre-set the quality level (check 'tools' on your main menu and see if it's there) or if you'll get a second popup window at the 'save' stage allowing you to choose a quality level for each photo you save.
It is a good idea to save each re-worked photo under a new file name so you preserve the original full-format data file in the event you want to re-edit that photo for another use. (Once you shrink a pic, blowing it up again doesn't get back what you threw away.)
If you can tell us which photo editor you are using, some one here will almost certainly be familiar with it and be able to give you more specific 'click-by-click' instructions.

I'm surprised that no one ever mentions Picasa (by Google). You can re-size your pics, and do alot more with it, and it's free too. here's a blurb about it ..
Picasa is software that helps you instantly find, edit and share all the pictures on your PC. Every time you open Picasa, it automatically locates all your pictures (even ones you forgot you had) and sorts them into visual albums organized by date with folder names you will recognize. You can drag and drop to arrange your albums and make labels to create new groups. Picasa makes sure your pictures are always organized.
Picasa also makes advanced editing simple by putting one-click fixes and powerful effects at your fingertips. And Picasa makes it a snap to share your pictures – you can email, print photos home, make gift CDs, instantly share via Hello™, and even post pictures on your own blog.

I've never heard of that one. But with the quantity of photos I've got stored in this box, it'd probably take 10 minutes to load and sort everytime I opened it. Besides, I've got stuff sorted by subject, not date. Not sure at all I would want a program re-sorting my files every time I used it....

You'll be surprised how many images you do have, it finds all of them, and it doesn't re-organize all your files and folders, it leaves them as they already are organized, but it also organizes them by date (when you've got Picasa open).
Real handy proggie, there are some basic edits you can do, then undo if you don't like them. Add text etc.

is an old thread here on Breaktime that includes a lot of misc. data on posting pics and the Irfanview download.
as Buddha said to the hotdog vendor .... "make me one with everything"
Thanks to all for the help........Dday, what you describe is how I always used to downsize, but for some reason the computor down here, I can't do it (might be just the fact that everything is in spanish, and the options are different)
Anyway, I think I will try the Piasca......
Thanks!
Picasa sounds Spanish, anyway.I tried to download it several weeks ago, and couldn't get it back then. maybe too much traffic at the server, who knows. Maybe I'll try it now. Good luck!
