I’m always surprised at how much attention the squeaks get. You have old hardwood floors, they squeak. Seems natural to me. I live in a 100+ yr. old farmhouse with several additions and floor combinations. You want to hear squeaks, wow. But I don’t think it’s worth the trouble to eliminate squeaks unless you’re planning to make some changes in the flooring anyway. How bad is it?

Determining just what is causing the leak can sometimes be part of the problem. I have a 25 yr old home with some hardwood flooring and quite a bit of squeaks. Unfortunately, some of the squeaks are also in the carpeted areas, which makes me believe the problem is with movement of the underlayment. I tore up some flooring recently, and found that unsupported plywood joints spanning a joist were rubbing against each other and squeaked. I corrected it by bracing it underneath, not always an option without alot of work. I've heard that for hardwood, it may work to try to get some talcum powder down in the space that the squeak seems to be coming from, give that a try, I can't see where it would hurt anything. Aside from that, it's a bit of the nature of the beast, and can be considered part of the 'character' of the place.

I live in a split-level home that was built in the fifties, with hardwood flooring throughout the house. The hardwood has begun to squeek when it is walked on, especially in the hallway. Is there a way to minimize this or stop it completely? I realize that construction adhesive would have prevented the problem, but I guess that wasn't used a lot in the fifties.
*It's not used a lot now.
*What's under the flooring -- boards or plywood? Is there access to the underside of the floor?
*There are boards under the flooring, but they are inaccesible in the area with the worst problems. It is in the hallway.

*Mad Dog, in your case they're character creaks not squeeks. I've got a couple, in the hall in front of my 16 yr old daughters b.r. door. I call that peace of mind. Others might think it annoying.
*I bet the windows in that same room are painted shut too, huh cal? Sign me - "the father of 2 screamage girls"
*I am trying to correct a similar problem, except that my two year old son thinks when he hears floor squeek that he needs to get out of bed. I can see where it would be handy in your case, but having two boys makes it pretty easy to know where they are at all times. I think I might try the expanding foam trick, but I will have to do it from above. I guess minimul expanding would be best suited for this job. Thanks,Brad
