We’ve laid a wide plank (5″/7″) birch wood floor and are looking at stains for it. What we’ve found we don’t like very much: there’s too much contrast in the wood for our tastes. I know there are sealers that will tone down the contrasts and make the stain more even, but is that a good idea on a floor? Anyone have any other ideas? We were originally thinking of a dark stain (toward mahogany) but are now looking at a golden oak as the best alternative.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

If you are using polyurethane, you might try some on a scrap piece of flooring without using a stain ...... it might give you what you what you are looking for. The pigments in stain tend to highlight the grain of the wood. If the natural look isn't what you want, you can experiment with a wash stain. Thin the stain till you get the look you want, using scraps as samples. Just be sure to keep track of how much thinner was added, and how much stain you started with so you duplicate it if needed. Good Luck.
