How to trim a 1 and 5/8 deep ext window?
I just read the article on applying exterior trim around a flange type window. The example had a window depth of 1″ from flange to window frame.
My windows protrude 1 5/8 from the flange/sheathing to the window frame.
I’d like to make the trim 1/4″ deeper than the window so a reveal of 1/4″ is left and it provides protection for the window. But that means the trim needs to be 1 7/8″ thick. Is this right? Seems awful thick – but otherwise window will protrude beyond the trim. Do I build up the trim around the window with sheathing that is same width/length as window trim?
Any suggestions would be appreciated

I would fur out the trim with sheathing, unless the siding wont cover the exposed edge. Fibercement would not likely cover it since it is less than a half inch minimum thickness when lapped. In that case I would use a material suitable for trim to fur it out, like lumber or a man made plastic such as Azec etc.
I would use 5/4 trim and live with the protruding rim of the window. The window is what it is. Lipstick on a pig and all that...

Are the windows vinyl clad? You don't need to build the trim out past the window projection. Your main concern is what you are using for siding. The trim needs to be thicker than the siding, that's all. You can use strips under the trim to gain thickness, make sure they are able to stand up to exterior work, trim is flashed properly and caulked to prevent water intrusion. I used 3/8" exterior plywood under 3/4" pine for the window trim on this job, with a limited budget. I used 5/4" for the door casings so I didn't have to have a strip or extra joint at the doors. The window edge is proud of the trim a little.
