How about I try *your* saw on one of thoes?!!!
*I don't know about sawing it...but I for one do not want to lift it!
*What exactly is in there ? Is it like a steel re-bar or something ?
*Mark,I guess this is why God invented the Portaband.Ed. Williams
*It is that Ron. Epoxied (?) in. See this site for more info.
*Mark - Do you cut those on site? Or do you specify length when you order? - jb
*Mark,What are "standard species" in your part of the world?JonC
*No, made to order, though sometimes you may have to cut ( say when the top edge is going to interfere with a roof line ) but you always use the plumbers saw when you have to that.
*Here we use a lot of Cypress, though this tends to be a regional thing. Framing in general is either Cypress or Radiata, some Slash Pine, Hardwood for headers and Girder trusses, this is usually Tasmanian Oak ( generic name for the Messmates ) or Spotted Gum. Finish work is either finger jointed pine, MDF, or Meranti from the Phillipines.
*Do you have decent sized trees there? Forests? I remember reading about how the lack of availability of lumber influenced building practices in Europe for instance. - jb
*Is Radiata a type of pine? How big do they get. Do they grow in native forests or are they plantation type trees?JonC
*Yes , we have forests, though as everywhere else we've flogged the guts out of them. Most rain-forests are now World Heritage listed and cannot be logged anymore.Hopefully we'll continue to use plantation timber though of course the quality that you would get with old growth forest isn't there.
*Radiata is a plantation pine. I'm not sure that you don't even have it over there? Seem to recall an article in FHB recently on plantation timbers. Size? Say average log at 2 ft diam at the butt. These are usually pruned of the lower branches in the early years to limit knots.
*A good buddy of mine went to Asia as a carpenter on several projects over a number of years. Think of how broadening that could be. Wouldn't it be great if we could do work exchanges, say for a year? I'd love the chance to learn other systems and methods, plus have extended exposure to another culture. - jb
*I'm not sure where we stand now, with the slow Japanese economy, but a year ago nova Scotia and Cape Breton where sending tradesmen by the dozen to Japan to teach them stick construction, building western style houses. The average age of carpenters there was over 50, and tradesmen were in great demand. Lots of guys were interested in going; you'd have to come away learning something.
*Mark, running my saw through that monstrosity would sure beat the heck out of some of the other things I have inadvertently run it through.Pete Draganic
*That's exactly what my friend was doing. They put him up in an apartment and paid him well for his time too. He even went to Korea on one trip. They don't have kids and he always has been kind of a free spirit, but he really liked it for a while. I have traveled some in my life, and the one thing that would sway me is if English is the language or not. I know that sounds petty, it does affect the depth of my enjoyment. - jb
*Mark,They've planted alot of a hybrid pine called KMX in my area in the last 10 years. I think Radiata may be one of the parent species. I think KMX is a fad that has come and gone in my immediate area but there will certainly be some on the market in my lifetime. We've kind of rediscovered a strain (or distinct sub species according to some of the DNA boys) of native western valley Ponderosa Pine. I put in 5 acres of it on ground too wet for Doug Fir and its very happy and outgrowing the local KMX plantings.JonC
*I'll run my saw through that and bill the general
