I work for a remodeling company and when we do additions we always put the straps on the inside of the structure. It always interferes with the sheet rock. Is there any reason why you cant put it on the outside of the building. Just wondering. Also,..I am taking applications for a hurricane strap installer. I am having so much fun on my own addition I thought I would share a little of the “FUN STUFF” .

Cutawooda,
Don't take this the wrong way but if you put the hurricane straps on correctly, it shouldn't mess up your drywall at all. We have to use them all the time (its Florida) and don't have any trouble.
Hint* There are left and right straps and a left will interefere with drywall if used as a right.
BTW, Simspon makes a raftertruss holder (I think its an H2) that goes outside and meets at the trussrafter top plate intersection at the exterior part of the wall.
I use both interior and exterior strapping for the best protection. I figure straps are cheap...replacing a whole roof is not.
Mike
*Actually, those strapsi shouldbe installed on the outside to be installed correctly. That way the sheathing on the outside helps hold the top plates down. If you install them on the inside, there isn't much to help hold down the inside of the plates except the drywall.
*Ron, I don't know if we're talking about the same thing. I'm refering to block construction with a 2 x 8 PT top plate bolted into the bond beam. (Typical Florida construction). Hurricane clips nail to the PT top plate.Mike
*I am talking about the Simpson Strong ties that you nail to your top plate and your rafter or joist. The straps for your headers and the straps for your ridge/rafter connections.
*Cutawood, Yep, we're talking the same thing.Mike
*Michael -I've never been to Florida, and hope to avoid that state for the remainder of my life. I'm used to frame walls, and have never seen a hurricane clip installed correctly. Is this typically what you use as a tie-down ?http://www.strongtie.com/products/connectors_list/images/h25.gifThat's the most common one around here.
*Ron, Yep, thats it. Plus I put a H2 clip on the oustide of the wall as well. And hey, whats wrong with Florida besides being hot, lots of bugs, humidity, retirees and no high paying jobs? At least there is no state income tax! ;)Mike
*> And hey, whats wrong with Florida besides being hot, lots of bugs, humidity, retirees and no high paying jobs? Elections, perhaps? ;-)-- J.S.
*John, Hey, the elections are OK, we just can't count! And have you seen all those punch card style election machines are now being sold on ebay. No kidding! Some are going for $500. each! Crazy.Mike
*Michael --We have those same machines (or maybe an older model) here. But not for sale, they're still using them. I did find out in the last primary where the dimpled chads come from. The blank ballots come like that from the factory, mine had several when it was torn off the pad and handed to me. Of course you guys in Florida can count. You just get different answers depending on which party you're in. ;-)-- J.S.
*Here what I did, on the outside, bottom hole I tapcon in the block
*looks good , johnnie...how are you going to finish the interior ?..will you strap the walls.. stucco... or stud them ?
*That is the next question. Contractor buddy is trying to talk me into steel studs. It will definty be stud wall with 3 1/2 inches of insulation with a stucco outside. I was going to go wood studs but he says steel cheaper, straighter, easier. so I,m a thinking
*Just curious--is that a common way to lay block in your neck of the woods? Stacked rather than a running bond?
*The block was laid that way in order to completly fill with concrete. the webs line up better. Eight inches of solid concrete from footing to peak of gable.
*Congratulations Johnnie, it's coming along. Done fighting with the Inspector? Joe H
*Found out that a P.E. can override a county inspector, here. I got seven P.E. at my company employeement.
*Seems like you've still got 3 holes that you're not hitting in those things. Has Simpson reviewed the way you're installing those ?
