Any instances of generators being used to run a refrigerator and the refrig motor being damaged? (assuming proper size and length elect cord?).
i wonder how well regulated the power output from a portable generator is
and if it would trash the motor in my 5 year old $1,200 side by side refrig.
Replies
probably wouldn't trash it unless you were generally overloading it with lots of other appliances and load.
portable generators do fluctuate voltage output. battery chargers and more delicate electronics are sensitive to it but motors less so. Most folks don't realize that line voltage from the company varies 20% commonly too.

I have a 4000W DeWalt jobsite type portable generator which I use about five times a year for power outages. When we have a heavy thunderstorm out here in Leavenworth county or an ice storm, or a blizzard, it is not unusual to lose power for 12 hours. I hook up my phone, refrigerator(similar to yours), my TV, my freezer, several lights, and even a computer. Never had a problem.
During Charlie I had a 5250 watt in my lanai running a side by side fridge, big screen TV, 8000 BTU and 6000 BTU window AC units, some lamps, pumps and lites for 4 aquariums, two computers, and some misc. stuff. No damage to anything. Played it safe and unplugged the fridge when using the microwave.
If anyone ever needs to borrow them for an emergency, they sit in the garage - until Ivan - maybe. Shipping can't cost that much.
Hey Sonny, what's a lanai?
its an elite porch/patio
I see....guess I should know that.
Thanks
I wondered the same...
I guess that shows the class status..
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming.... WOW!!! What a Ride!
The funny thing is, with the roof over you, you can feel like sitting outside but let it rain and you won't get soaked. since the salesman has already soaked you, you could define a lanai as a presoaked structure.
Can I make it as a stand up comic or should I keep banging nails?

Not really elite. Mine is about a 3" step down and two walls of all screening with aluminum framing (2" x 2") verticals about evey 6', one horizontal about 32" off the concrete (actually river rock), screen door.
One 8' alum patio door from family room to lanai, 12' - 3 panel doors from living room and I had a 5' pat. dr from the master bath. Closed up part of it and installed a french door.
So my lanai is 12 x 27 - one 12' wall and one 27' wall. I plan to pour 3" to level up the floor with the house, glass in the 27' wall with all sliding doors abd CBS the 12' wall possibly with a fire place.
Lanais here are from about 6 x 8 for small condos to larger. Typical pool set up is a lanai size like mine but the 27' screen wall would be gone and open to a pool with a large pool cage.
Had to correct that 8 inch and 12 inch patio door. I'm not really that skinny (-:
Also, uninsulated drywalled ceiling roof over the lanai area.

Seriously now, if I read that right, you had the generator INSIDE the lanai???
Even with windows open, having under the same roof would give me concerns that CO gas could do me in. During the ice storm we had here a few yeas back, there were several strange poisoning like one where a generator was running under an open dining rom window and the gasses were sucked into the house. Another one where it was running in a garage with the garage door open and the gasses almost kiled the occupants. The strangest was a guy who knew about the danger from fumes so he moved the portable generator over near the bulkhead ( outside door to the basement) to run it with the hatch open. Problem was that the house acted as a chimney, so the fumes didn't drift out of the bulkhead door. the chimney effect sucked the fumes in and up through the house and killed the old geezer.
'course, with all those cigarettes you smoke, you are probably imune to CO poisoning by now anyway, LOL

Lanai: Fancy Hawaiian term for a covered, closed in patio. Or something like that.
DonThe GlassMasterworks - If it scratches, I etch it!
When I lived in Hawaii, everyone had a lanai. No deck or porch, everything was a lanai, regardless of construction. My wife still calls them lanai's, and we left 22 years ago. A blast from the past when I read your post. Wonder how the old townhouse is doing...
I never met a tool I didn't like!
II think it is a hawaii word.
I've heard that some Hawaiians even have a house to go with their lanaii. One of their big building booms came when folks went to the banks and took out lanii equity loans so they could do house additions they way folks here do deck additions to their houses.
Why do they use so many Is in the words there? I think if I worked there I would start an business called Lan Eye Contruction and Developement

Piffin, the generator's exhaust was pointed toward the outside wall screening (no patio doors) and about 8' for my family room patio door, which was kept shut. Went to HD and bought two sheets of 2' styrofoam , cut them and wedged them between the sill and stucco jamb in front of the 2- 4' patio doors (8' slider). Slipped two #12 ext. cords between the patio door and vertical track and sealed that 3/8" gap with - what else? - duct tape from top to bottom, and both the inside and outside.
Never smelled one iota of exhaust fumes.
OK, I may be Greek, but over the years I did learn a little from you guys. (-:
If I remember right there are 13 letters in the Hawaiian alphabet, including all (or most) of the vowels. Words like, Likelike (leekyleeky), Waikiki, Mauka, Ewa, are ladened with vowels because vowels make up a larger percentage of the alphabet. And it sounds a lot better than words chocked full of constenants, imo. Who can pronounce some of the eastern European words that contain 12 letters, only one of which is a vowel?
Famous university in Oaho (not), Commoniwantolei U. Say it fast to get the full effect : )

LOL, I'm glad my daughter didn't want to go to school in hawaii!
Interesting thing about the vowel vs consonant thing. The shemit languages like aramaic have no written vowels, they are implied only. Kind of like my screen name derives from my initials, PFN.

It's a screen porch. The AL prefab salesmen call it by that exotic hawaiian title so they can reach deeper into your pockets or to make it sound more desireable so more people will buy them.

had a winter home not far from you ( Lehigh Acres Fla ) it had a lanai plus a mansard style screend enclosure over pool , the roof of the house over hung the back of the house by 12' , house roof was tile with 8" of fg insulation in attic,i only used home from dec to march & it was always confotable on lanai . If i could build same here in can. i would have one ( i still have the house plans)
Yep, that's typical - mansard pool cage.
Funny, I've getting read to go fix a roof leak in a subdivision near my house called "Foxfire."
I figured you had your wits about you, but I had to mention it for benefit of anyone else reading.

You mean someone here might think I skipped a floor or two while on the elevator of life?
we loved our one trip to Hawaii.
i thought it would be a tourist trap, but on Kauai for example mostly two lane roads and no traffic lights.
Directions are a problem.
on Maui :
You ask - "how do I get to the dive shop"
They say: " Go down south on King Kamulucks dr and turn left on Kalamucckaluthen then two blocks turn on Kahakakaloandyo are there you are.
I just said thanks, and asked again when I got closer.
Hey, I can speak Hawaiian!
"A, EE, I, O, U"
I like it wehn my customers speak hawaiian, "Hey P, I owe you"

hopw come Miami and Hawaii got all the good cop shows back then? Was it 'cause the crooks can pronounce the gutteral vowels easier?

Nice development, IIRC. Not quite Grey Oaks, but nice.
You're right, and even where I live, Lakewood , is not quite up to the homes of Foxfire's caliber.
AHA! So you live in Naples too, eh?
Afraid not. Up here in the winterland. NJ Was about set to move there about 10 years ago. Got cold feet about leaving most of our family up here. Mostly my wife did.
I have relatives there. I visit often. Feel like it's my second home, even though I don't own anything there, yet. Play golf almost every day when I'm there, and therefore see alot of the subdivisions. Though I'm not familiar with Lakewood. Where is that?

Lakewood Blvd is off Davis Blvd. about 1/3 mile East of Airport Rd., and runs all the way to exit at the East Trail (41). We're maily single faminly homes with a few villas and I think three 4 story condos off the East Trail. 226 Dent Dr. (34112-5255) if you want to locate me via mapquest.com.
I kind of envy you. Been here in '91 and palm trees get old. I don't golf and prefer fresh water fishing. Miss the big oak ad mapel trees. People here wh consider Naples to be paradise think I'm nuts when I tell them I even miss opening my front door in the winter and getting that blast of cold air hitting me in the face.
Many of the guys in Mich. had 4-wheel drive pickups while I drove a Dodge maxi van that used to pull at least one of them out of snow banks each winter. I used to tell them it's not "what" you drive but "how" you drive as I hood up a strap to pull them out with my auto. trans and dune type snow tires. Those were the macho guys who drove like morons anyway. Had one of those hot rods sideswipe me during a snow storm and blowing wind cutting visbilty to next to nothing. I ended up on the road while he ended up in a farmers field.
Anyway, like I said I envy you. Miss small town and country type people also.
Oh, sure. That's down by Lely. The development/course with the horse statue at its entrance IIRC (Flamingo Island?). My relatives are on the north side of town, just above the new Ritz Carlton place. I forget the name of their development. Boca something I think. So I don't go down to Davis Blvd area too much. Except to play Lely and I think Naples Heritage is down there too. That's a nice course for the money. Not too outrageous like some of the really nice ones down there.
While I don't think I'd ever miss the snow and cold wind, I know what you mean about small town life. Live in a town with pop. of about 10,000. But that's 25% more than when I moved here 17 years ago. My ideal life would be to be a snowbird. Maybe when my daughter gets done with school in a few years.
If you have been gone since 91, you know nothing of the idiots on the road nowadays in the age of SUV's. Most of them think they are immune to sliding on the road. Seem to go faster the worse the roads get. And I have no idea how they are seeing where they are going.
Lely is actually farther South on 41 from us - maybe about 4-5 miles south.
And Naples Heritage is about 3 miles East of us on Davis. I do work there for 4-5 condo associations managerd by Newell Prop. Mgt. one of the only two mgt. companies I now work for.
If you plan to become a snow bird in a few years, consider buying a place in teh new future, renting it out until you become a snow bird. Prop. values here have gone up a about 15% annually. Commercial even more. Again son Tom bught a commercial condo for new offices and small warehouse for about $260K, but never had the time to finish it's build out for his own business, so when he was approached by the next door large GC to sell it to them, he did for about $370 - one year later. Bought my house in 7/01 for $165K and recently saw one two doors away from mine was just sold for $25OK without the upgrades I have.
Son Tom bought a 3/2 villia with one car garage about 2 - 2.5 years ago in Lakewood for $85K and sold it maybe 6 months ago for $129. He has about 5-6K in it in decorating, tile, and carpet.
Anyway, Naples is a place to make money, either in real estate, or construction, or both if you have the time & capital to get started.
I'm very familiar with how property values have escalated in Naples. Northern NJ has been pretty much the same though. My long range plan is to sell current place for 2 smaller ones down the road, 1 here and 1 there. Or I may just rent for the summer months up here. Having been an absentee landlord in the past, I have no desire to get back into that.
"Having been an absentee landlord in the past, I have no desire to get back into that."
I can understand that. Besides, the realtors here who do manage those residences get about 10% of the rental amount. Your game plan seems like the route to go.
sorry for delay in replying we just got tail end of one of your storms 6" of rain according to feed buckets for horses. as for name " Foxfire " I got it from there years ago and named a spec developement I have here after it " Fox Fire Ridge " this spec deal hasent been much better than boss hogs spec sometimes alas the reason i sold my fla. home still miss it tho.
If you are concerned (which I was when I put in my generator), then I would suggest a UPS to "clean-up" the power supply.
Some of the higher end "single appliance" units that are designed for computers will give a guaranteed output (be sure, however, that you are sure what you are buying... not all regulate the output when still receiving power). Myself... went with a "central" Liebert 10KVA system that I picked up used.
I set up the back-up electrical panel on the Liebert unit... then fed the power to the Liebert from the generator. FWIW, it also cleans up the fluctuations in power company electricity (as was mentioned, even the power company lines fluctuate quite a bit), as the feed for the back-up panel also feeds through the Liebert.
I paid 3k for my unit (which is a BIG unit for the application I use it for) from a liquidator (wanted a smaller one, but this one was cheaper than I could find in the size I wanted).
One other benefit... the power output from the big Liebert is much higher than my generator's. The generator only feeds power to the batteries when the power is out. Thus, the amount of "surge usage" that is allowed is higher than I could have with my generator alone. When the "peak usage" levels off... the generator is pretty quick to recharge the batteries.
Just my .02
Consumer Reports had a test on portable generators a month or so ago. Some of the generators produced very low voltage. The low voltage can be hard or electric motors and possible result in them being damaged. You may want to try and find that article. I do remember a 5550 watt generator from Troy-built availabe only at Lowes as being a CR recomendation.
