Thinking about getting an HVLP sprayer. Main use would be for spaying doors and trim. Would need to spray both polyurethane and paint. Would mostly be small runs – so would like something easy to clean.
Anyone have brands and models they reccommend or any general comments?
Think I have seen some discussion here before, but don’t much care for the search “feature” and want current thoughts.
Thanks in advance,

HAven't had any peoblems with my Fuji......just be sure to get one that does what you'll be using it for primarily......I had to get a bigger nozzle to spray latex paints out of it.
Be well

On the subject, can anyone tell me about a Binks Phoenix Airless sprayer, 1 HP. An older model but brand new, actually put together from surplus parts by a former Binks repairman. He says they sold for $2250 in 1994, wants $500. Worth it or not, seems to be built like a truck.
Are we talking shop work or site work.....or both? Portability a factor? Is money a factor?
Here's one reference article for turbine rigs under $500.

I've got the Wagner 2600. Works just fine. Zero complaints. Like Andy said, you may want to get another tip for some paints. I've sprayed latex numerous times with the included #3 tip and the results are just fine.
In the shop, I normally use an Accuspray conversion gun. Great gun, no problems.
(Oddly enough, that Wagner HVLP stuff is identical to CapSpray stuff, but for less $$$. Might have something to do with the fact that Wagner bought CapSpray (wink, wink). )

Thanks for that info, Ron.
Gotta check that out.

Which Accuspray gun do you have? Is it the one with the cup on top of the gun? Seems like that might be a bit awkward. I do like the idea of getting an HVLP gun that I can run off my Thomas T-150 compressor.
Any more info appreciated.
Its called a versamax ( I think) No it is not a gravity fed gun ( one that has the cup on top) It is a siphon fed system (cup on the bottom). Like I said you can also get it as a pressure fed system (remote 2 qt cup or 2 1/2 gal or 5 gal pot) check out the website. I think you will be amazed. Now I have only used water based finishes with it. But after using the white poly they sell I cant other than cost see why I would ever need to shoot latex through it other than to paint my house. But I got to do that soon so at the wood show this coming Nov Im gonna see how much a 5 gal pot and hoses for the gun is gonna run me and if Ill need a different nozzle/needle set. But when I run the enduro poly through it alot of times I dont even have to do a final rb out. It comes out that good.

Based upon that article, I just bought the Apollo 1000 setup directly from Apollo for $999. Almost a $200 discount.
Although I won't be using it for another month, it's supposed to handle practically any finish at a lower temp etc. We'll find out.
Goldhiller, Thanks for the link, good artical.
Shoeman,
I’ve owned CH, Wagner and Accuspray setups and among them the Accuspray is far and away the best. In my opinion the Accuspray guns are the best guns you can buy. A #10 gun from Accuspray runs about $400.00 and can be used with either a compressor or a turbine. To use it with a compressor you need to purchase the regulator for about $50.00 more.
What you wish to spray is very important to which “product†you buy and how you set it up. I’ve sprayed lacquer to latex with my gun and have never had a problem with it not spraying. I use a 3 stage fan cooled turbine to power my gun and very rarely use my compressor. If you go with a turbine I’d highly recommend a fan cooled unit.
Fan cooled units have some very important advantages over regular turbines, mainly they cool the air. This is very important if you are going to spray solvent based lacquer as the warmâ€er†air can cause the lacquer to blush.
So if you want to spent around $900.00 check the Accuspray 230K which includes the #10 gun hose and 3 stage fan cooled turbine.
Resurrected, just posted this to RonT and now see that you have the #10 gun. That is the one with the pot on top right? How is that for comfort and manuverablity?
You mention that you usually use your sprayer with the turbine - is the performance better than with the compressor? I have a small twin tank compressor that I would just as soon run the gun off - just don't need more items to store.
Thanks for your input,

Tools of the Trade just had a review of HVLP sprayers and one of the things that he specifically looked at was clean up.
It should be available on their web site.
Thanks Bill,
Checked it out - seems they like the Graco 3800. Just when I was leaning towards Accuspray.
This spring I bought the Campbell Hausfeld model that sells (complete with Turbine) for around $200 on Amazon. I'm a homeowner, not a pro, so didn't want to invest a ton of money. I used it to prime and paint interior room trim and stairs. I have no experience with truly pro equipment in this category but I was quite happy with the unit. It covered well, no spatter problems (as long as the paint was filtered as described in the operating instructions) and cleaned up reasonably easily. I found that for the walls themselves, rollering was faster than this sprayer but the sprayer wins hands down for trim. My only unpleasant surprises: (1) it's noisy, hearing protection is a must, (2) if I took a half hour break, I had to clean the unit for optimum performance. Not sure if higher end sprayers are better in this regard. If you need super precision in control of the pattern, or professional accessories like a gallon pressure pot, this isn't the unit for you, but if your needs are modest this offers good performance at a good price.
The Campbell Hausfeld gun was the first HVLP I purchased some 8 or 9 years back. It took a lot of “fiddling†to finally get it to spray a descent coat of finish and descent is an over statement. The gun sold now is entirely plastic and really not worth the $200.00 bucks unless you wish to spray primer.
The setup is also called a “bleeder†type gun. This means that air is continuously blowing through the gun when the turbine is on. This is the absolute worst type gun for any quality finish. The air moving through the gun causes the “product†(the stuff you are spraying) to be dried around the nozzle. This distorts whatever pattern you have and give uneven spray layers. This also causes you to have to clean the gun quite often while spraying.

Ive got the accuspray turbine set up too and have no complaints. Very versatile with different needle set ups. Check out woodweb.com and go to the finishing forum. Mostly professional finishers there but a lot of information.
Charles, thanks for the website - more food for thought
Thanks for all the input.
Found a local sprayer supply store in the yellow pages. Spoke to a guy on the phone. Seemed like a strait shooter. Will try to get over there in the next week or so and look at the units and get more opinions from him. Nice thing there is that they specialize in sprayers, and service everything they sell. Seems like the place to buy. Will use the info gained here to discuss things there and all should work well.
Thanks again,
Shoe
