In the course of my tenure as a nail-bending thumb-banger ,(no waffle heads for me thank you ) I like to think I have picked up some decent knowlege-experience and practices that justify me calling myself a carpenter , finish carpenter, custom builder as the situation permits. So I have bought my 1st house w/ the intent of puting my stamp on it ,which I am. Unassuming 24′ x32′ ranch circa 1960,needs atention. N.W. Me. Near White Mtns.. So I’m ripping off neglected pine clapboards cupped &split so bad, replacing w/ white cedar shingles S & R. ,dipped for 1/2hour in penofin (a marine-based penatrating oil ). Will build-up corners w/ mahogany(cambara) 2x stock. Have already started w/ milled up 2×6 mahogany water table to start a flair (that &3 courses make up the flair) . 4′ to the weather ’cause I want to,5d s.s.ring shank ,1×8 T&G sheathing, and (here we go ) typar housewrap. I intend in the future to install a vapor barrier throughout the interior (possibly in the form of icynene blown insulation [which is in itself a vapor-air barrier] ) and 5/8″sheetrock to replace the 3/8″ I now have. Even though I’m a “newby” to this forum ,I’ve been busy. Iknow there are currently 2 discussions on this topic hotly contested ,as well as a $hi+load in the archives. My question is “Do I have to tear off what I started to install 4″o.c. furring strips , or tar paper or cedar breather ? I’m quite confident I can keep out the elements and /or channel out any pesky intrusions ( I’ve even used one of Mike Guertin’s tips & installed a clapboard on the framed sill of a window I replaced . thanks Mike ! ) My point is I don’t think my house will fall down But w/ what I’ve been reading, if anyone can convince me otherwise I’ll consider tearing stuff apart (grumble-grumble) Thank you all !!

I'm not really shure what aspect of your work your question is in regards to, but I think its the Typar under the Cedar shingles, no?
If Typar has a history of reacting with your cedar, then I'd worry about that.
If Typar + cedar's OK, then I guess that only leaves the question of a rain screen or breather. It seems to me that shingles will breathe more easily than clapboards would, so maybe you'd be OK without? (as long as you've already done it!)
*Norm - From what I've read, It's Tyvek that breaks down behind bare cedar ,(that base is covered) Thanks for your input though . Wes
*Wes,I think you will find that your worries are unfounded if you visit http://www.cedarbureau.orgTom
*Thanks, Tommy B...........................That's a large site isn't it ?
