Yeah, I know they’re light, and I know they’re cheap…..
I can kind of stand flush ones, but the fake panel ones really bug me……
OK, done with the rant, what’s anyone found to be the best way to attach hooks to ’em?
Nothing heavy, just a robe hook or two…

The glue-on hooks aren't bad; you have to buy quality though. For metal hooks, I use the butterfly/toggle bolts (the standard wall-anchors for drywall just don't seem to last).

Well there's a blanket opinion! Maybe not in Maine, but my kids need hooks on their doors to keep everything from ending up on the floor...I suppose I could just beat them, but that seems harsh!
if beating them is definitely out of the question, try hollow wall anchors or adhesive hooksor hang solid doors

just put the hooks in the cieling and hang the kids from them like bats, LOLThere are J shaped hooks that snap on over top of the doors fro hanging stuff on. Some white plastic and some brass plated. Think Walmart

Don't be flip floping now it ain't election year . hooks DON"T belong on doors , 'specialy the crappy things that hang over the top .
No Kerry-ing on for me here. The guy is determined to ruin his doors, so I'm just helping out

I've robe hooks on all of my bedroom (solid wood) doors.
(Wife had a tendency to hang drycleaning on wall sconces.)
Wouldn't dream of using the "over the top" hooks though.

What am I missing? What's the big deal with over the door hooks?“The significant problems we face cannot be solved at the same level of thinking we were at when we created them.” – Albert Einstein
They can bind the door, and/or knock the stop out of position.

First - just my opinion is all - not worth much to sop many in this world - take it or leave it.But I see a door as a work of craftsmanship to be treated with respecty. Not anybody can hang a door let alone build one. And a lopsided loading that only increases through the years will warp a well made door.

Not to mention the junk hanging on the door that slides over as the door is opened and closed gets in the stop . If it is on one of the crappy overthe top hooks it scratches the finnish ruins the woodwork and makes the place look like heck . Put the hooks on the wall or better yet in a closet.
You excluded heavy objects, but I'll do my solution anyway. I drill a larger hole through the face, opposite face is better, and glue a dowel against the interior of the opposite face (so the dowel bridges the two faces of the door). The size of the dowel is eye-balled from the size/weight of what you want to hang there (e.g. metal baskets for eye/ear protection or a time-clock)

Why don't you just buy the thingee that hangs on top of the door and allows you to hang clothes on it? Either that or you can remove the top rail and drop a 2x12 down inside the door....;-)
You mean a 1 1/8 by 12, don't you? :)
You don't buy your lumber where I do....;-)
If you can get a 2x12 inside a 1 3/8" hollow core door, you're definitely not getting your lumber where I do. :)
I buy my lumber wholesale from some guy in Darbuti, Africa. He claims it shrinks on the way over and therefore becomes 'Metric'. :-)
Must be the same guy who sold me that metric Crescent wrench. :)
LOL!

How about mounting your hooks on a 1x4 or 1x6 nearly the width of the door, then screw the hook board into the rails (they were 1 1/4" wide before the door was trimmed to fit the jamb).

There is a special type of Molly anchor (the expanding mushroom type) made for hollow core doors. Even a standard Molly will work fairly well if you use the shortest available.
run a 1x on the flat across it.
screw hooks into the 1x.
it's a hollow core door ... I don't think yer ruining the architectural value any.
