I’ll try and keep this simple, were building our log home, we have the roof complete up to the point of getting into the connections from the I joist to the versa lam that was recommended by Boise. The lay out is a 12 / 12 pitch main roof coming up to the gable dormer that is also 12 / 12 pitch. The vrsa lam basically makes up the valley between the 2 roofs. 2 questions, first, we were told to use a LSSU-310 type hanger that is for a sloped and skewed roof installation, the hanger just does not seem to be the correct hanger, does the joint at the BSCI to versa lam require a hanger ? second if a hanger is required does anybody know what hanger is suppose to be installed.
Yes, were onwer builders, but were using a contractor, he just dosr not have much experence with this type of roof.
Thanks in advance Skip

I finished framing a building recently that had some lssu's spec'ed. I sure thought they looked a lot wimpier than regular joist hangers. I called the engineer and he assured me and approved them to hold 20' 16'' rfpi 90's in a joist system. They're a pain to use and really difficult to accurately set. At least that was my inclination after using them. but I only used a few. They should work for you. Bend the right side "wing" out and the left side "wing" in or vice-versa until these bends allow the hanger to sit off of the valley at the required skew, and nail them on your valley rafter. Just follow Boise recommendations. I think you have the right hanger. I don't think a hanger would be necessary for traditional framing lumber but since you are using engineered eye joists. Its best to follow specifications. Make sure the eye joist is properly blocked where it sits in the hanger.

Thanks quicksilver, we did add web stifeners, however we read and followed the Boise installation instructions of installing the hanger on the joist first. I think were going to install the hanger on the versa lam then set the joist, this may make it easier. We have about 70 of these to install so it may take awhile.
Thanks again Skip
These questions need to be directed to the people who supplied the I-joists. They have access to the designers of the I-joist system, and can answer your questions.
The LSSU hangers are sort of a pain. But they're easier, cheaper, and faster to get than custom ordered hangers. They probably require web stiffeners, which is why you may be thinking that they look wrong.
Your supplier should have all the hangers you need in stock. I'm surprised they didn't furnish them along with the I-joist and beam package.
Sounds like we have the correct hanger. We did install web stiffners, but after a long day it just did not look right. We grabbed a brew and after a fresh look, it does look like it will work. Boise is instructing us to install the hanger on the joist first, were going to install the hanger on the versa lam then drop the joist into the seat of the hanger.
Thanks for the help.
I can't imagine what difference it would make if you put the hanger on the joist or the beam first. Either way should work fine. I guess you're finding out why using I-joists for rafters isn't done too often.(-:
