All you Sherlocks may have figured it out!! I knew I could count on you!! Although I haven’t tested it yet to actually PROVE it.
I have a whole house in-the-ceiling fan, opening about 2×4, I’d guess, in the 2nd story hallway on the opposite side of the house from where the fireplace is. That “big hole” you guys talked about in connection with my “cold air” can lights is upstairs!!! I was re-joint compounding (can’t think of the “official” word right now – skim coating??) my walls upstairs in preparation for painting, painting woodwork, etc., and I took the louver contraption off the fan to clean it and possibly paint it, etc., and never put it back up. When I procrastinate, I procrastinate big time!! We don’t feel any cold air really coming from it, so I never thought about it. Maybe all that warm air whizzin’ past us as it gets sucked up there gives us a false sense of…..oh, what the h*ll, apparently we’ve all been brain dead the last few years!!!
Geez, hate to admit to being such a dope…and for such a long time, yet!! (Head hung in shame) But you guys have come to the rescue!!! That’s gotta be it!! And who but you “always ready for a challenge” bunch of wonderful guys could connect cold air from ceiling can lights to a big hole somewhere (other than the one in my head), to a smokey fireplace???? (Now don’t go getting all swell-headed, those flowery praises may sound a lot different if the experiment fails!) That louver cover thing is goin’ up TOMORROW (have to wait for my son to get home from school) and then I’ll do the formal test by starting a fire. Stay tuned!!

We love you too, adrianne. But you still can't have our beer..................(-:
*Oh, c'mon, post a HARD one.I'd do more than mount the louver; an insulated, gasketed plug wouldn't be a bad idea. Be sure to feel the fountain of warm air above before you seal it off!(P.S. 10% of your energy savings should be forwarded to the be-nice-to-Freddy Fund, P.O. Box ....)
*Andrew: "an insulated, gasketed plug.." is this something I'd buy somewhere, or have to make? At one point I just stapled plastic over it, but the suction kept ripping it down. The thing's pretty old, and the motor has to be replaced. But where would I get a plug that's insulated and has gaskets? The opening is a little less than 3'x3' big.
