My wife and I have been in this house for two winters. I keep tinkering and trying to get my woodstove to perform properly, but still feel like something’s not right.
First, it’s more of a wood furnace. It is connected to the furnace. The previous owner routed the main duct from the stove on a downwards angle to the cold air return on the furnace, I think for two reasons: first, he wanted to use the furnace filters. second, he wanted to avoid running the furnace fan more than necessary, the furnace fan comes on when enough heat builds up.
But that’s the thing. Only after I’ve been firing the bejeezus out of it for several hours does this main pipe get hot enough that I can’t hold my hand on it. The exhaust pipe, coming out the top of the stove gets hellishly hot in a few minutes. It seems like 90% of the heat is going straight to the chimney.
Needless to say, it takes a lot of wood to heat the house. This is a good sized wood furnace. I’ve seen small stoves that cook you right out of a house, but this one doesn’t even cook you out of the basement.
Orignally, the stove’s main duct ran out and up into the first main duct coming off the furnace. This has been removed and patched. The furnace and stove are on separate thermostats.
Do any of you know what my best solution might be?
