Visiting some friends, I made some comments on the trim work they had done – geuss who they want to fix it.
Guess that’s what I get for openning my big mounth.
The crown has gaps as seen in the photos as well as a couple other spots – I only took the 2 shots.
the mantel I’m redoing the trim design – as you can see it looks weird. what do you call the emblem in the middle of the head piece? I’m changing the panel moulding so that there is a reveal along the bottom. right now it looks out of proportion. but am concerned I might have to move the “emblem” to recentre it to the new layout.
I’m hoping I won’t bust the emblem if I move it. That look like a stock item I can find if I need a new one?
as far as the crown, the gaps look like they are due to wavy ceiling, it’s got a lite popcorn texture. should I try and calk, or should I attempt to remove and scribe it? ( The joints I will have take down to recut)
I wish I’d never said anything, I ‘ve done some nice work for them before and they are expecting this to come out looking perfect. If I can make it look right I’ll be happy, but if not….
anyway….any tips?

Maybe IMERC could paint it for him and then they wouldn't notice these flaws in the trim. Waddya think?;)

That emblem is on the shelf at HD, or use to be. If not you can find it in the Rockler or Woodworkers Supply catalogs.

Caulk and sand the crown. Do they really want to keep the emblem? I don't think it can be moved. It's not really attractive anyway.
Yeah, I'm not too fond of it either, maybe I'll suggest losing it along with the two side ones. if they keep the side ones then the top one maybe they want to keep.
I only play a carpenter during the day................... nights weekends and such I'm a completely useless person who looks at those kinds of problems and nods my head and says" looks good"........okay I lie......but I swear from this day forth and in my next life, that's exactly what I'm going to do.

That's what I do. I don't get involved in that stuff. You only turn into a clown following a clown.

I'm with ya. Only I'm not the best liar so I usually say something like "looks pretty good! in a cheery voice...
I don't really care for popcorn ceilings. They look like they're intended for basements, commercial applications or music rooms. So, to my eye, the nicest crown never looks that great against it.
That inside corner can be vastly improved with just a little caulk and paint (you may have to re-paint the whole ceiling however). The outside corner looks perfect and I wouldn't want to mess with it just for sake of fixing up the inside corner.
That scarf joint needs some work. Maybe a nailer behind the crown in that area could be used to hold things more secure.

yeah the outside corner is good, but it's coming off because they want the mirror framed.
so that whole section is coming down ( it is above the mantel) a freize board will be installed for the crown that is above the mirror to go up against.
P.S. I don't like those ceilings either. and I don't know yet if he even has a nailer behind there yet.

Oh, so they WANT the mirror broken!;)You just can't win. you're in this for good - or bad...The emblem is fin where it is if they want to keep it. But the poanel frame around it is disproportionate. The bottom of that should come up 2/3 of the way to the emblem. it'll still be cheap mantle, but better. The mirror is what is jamming the crown tight to the cieling, and the intersecting piece is on a separate shelf system, of different material. My bet is that this is a new house and settling, shrinking into place. Much can be done with filer andf new pain, but NOT untill it has finished drying and settling.

The house is about 13 years old. they had this done - hmmmm maybe 5 years ago or so.
I'll move the panel moulding and see how it looks from there.
You're looking for tips?
Don't let me invite you to my place.
There's nothing wrong with that trim unless the house was more than $1M
