Tried to post this earlier today and it seemed to vaporize. If you see a 2nd post like this, so sorry.
Let me start off by saying I am not a roofer.
More and more roofs around here are getting a layer (one width) of Ice & watershield going up the gable ends from eve to ridge. Never use to see this. Is this overkill or good practice? I probably should mention I live in a rainforest, 100″of rain per year.
thanks

We use it here in snow and deep cold country for ice dam leakage prevention. Since we aren't getting ice dams on gable overhangs, we don't waste our money putting expensive underlayment there.
Just the felt, ma'am. That'll do.
Why don't you ask some of your local builders and roofers why they are doing it?
Maybe it is being specified, and they are required to do it to meet specs. But, if they are doing it thinking they are being prudent, they are spending money foolishly.
Cuz, the web site shows it? also along dormers. At 37.00 a SQ they wanna sell a lot.

I'll bet the website is designed to sell more of it than you need.
