We will be building a home with a 2-story great room (18 ft ceiling; balcony overlook) and we are looking for attractive ideas on how to finish the ceiling. Our builder tells us that a coffered ceiling will cost $10K — and we have seen it done in too many newly built houses these days. Any other ideas? Our taste runs in the traditional-craftsman vein. Not really looking for anything too modern.

What about a tin ceiling, or put in some of those plaster accents--like big plaster decorative elements around lights or chandeliers?
Danno -- Thanks for the idea. I have been looking at some tin ceiling web sites. Does anyone have experience with these? How costly are they to install? Do they make the room too noisy? I certainly like the look.
If you ask the Breaktime crowd they may also have some responses. They can be a surly bunch though, so lookout! (They can also be a surreal bunch!)

The Breaktime crowd? Who are they? I am new to all of this so I apologize if this seems like a silly question.
Breaktime is another Taunton forum. Second button in the middle row of buttons above.
As Uncle Dunc said, Breaktime is another forum--"sponsored" by Fine Homebuilding magazine and a lot of carpenters and people involved in other trades participate in the site. Good place to go with questions about building, plumbing, electrical, painting and so forth.
Someone mentioned TIN.. Try this link that somebody else had for another question.
Maybe it was for you?
