Just before my waste pipe exits the
house there is a 1ftx1ftx2ft hole
covered with a metal plate. The cavity
collects waste and footer tile water
where it then drains it to the city
sewer. Its very similar to a mini
septic tank. The smell is ungodly. How
do I remedy this?
One solution would be to make a charcoal
floor vent which might neutralize the
smell. Another would be to mechanically
seal the plate (it must be removable
because its not uncommon for this need
cleaning). Another would be to treat
the cavity with some sort of septic
system enzyme cleaner. Another would be
to connect it to the vent (at least 40
feet and up one storey).
Repiping concerns me because the pipes
are old clay style (circa 1930).
Excavating could make things worse. If
I separate the footer tile runoff and
the waste then I need a second line out.
Where do put the footer tile runoff. I
dont think it can go to the sewer
anymore?
I have done a lot on my own, but this
one has me baffled. If there is no easy
solution then maybe somebody can
straighten me out, so when I call the
plumber, I wont get taken down the wrong
path.

I would disconnect the tank from the sewer system. If you think this thing stinks, imagine the mess should the sewer ever back up to your basement level. I have seen this happen. It may be infrequent but it is a possibility.
I would install a sump pump in the tank and drain the water away from your house and where it would not burden others. Be sure you seal the outlet properly.
