In search of Bungalow Screw plug Buttons
1023.1 |
I am working on my 1948 Central California Bungalow and have run into the wall looking for a specific type of screw hole plug to match what I have peppering my exterior trimwork. The existing ones (or what there is left of them…) are mushroom shaped buttons filling 5/8″ holes. Now finding ANYTHING to fill a 5/8 hole has been hard enough, although I have found some, but what is really difficult is that they have a distinctly unmodern shape. Rather than the ubiquitious plug that I can find that has a very short and heavily rounded cap these have a 1/4 inch long 5/8 stem that goes into the hole and then a 3/8 inch tall cap protruding from the wood with only a little rounding to mimic the look of a peg I guess. The outside is about 3/4 diameter. Anyone out there know of a source for such an item? I suppose I could create some with the drill press, a jig, a plug cutter and 3/4″ dowel stock but I have so much must-do work on the agenda that spending a half a day on that sounds like a frivolous use of time if I could just buy some. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated, Thanks in advance. |

I was going to suggest "make them" , but if you want to buy them, you might have to go to a local woodworking shop and have them made. May not cost to much if the guy is quick to figure a way of making them.
Also, a local trim shop or millwork supplier may have them. If there are enough of them in the area, there may be a market and the local mill might have a pattern or cutter to make them.
If you haven't drawn blood today, you haven't done anything.
We have a bunch of local turners, businesses and hobbyists around, if you do, they might like the work.
If you could post a pic, that would help, I know I have a wood products shop down the street that sells tons of fabricated pegs, but hard to match without a visual.
