Install new vinyl window in old house
I’m going to install a new Milgard window in my house to relace my old wooden single hung. I ordered the window slightly smaller than the opening to allow for expansion and contraction, but I’m not sure how to fasten it. Does anybody have any advice?
Thanks a lot.

Doesn't it have nailing fins? See http://www.thisoldhouse.com/toh/knowhow/handbook/article/0,16417,218006,00.html
Have a look at:

Click on "Montering" over on the left side for a nice set of illustrated instructions on how to square up and shim a window. The text is in Swedish, but the pictures are clear enough even if you can't figure out the language.

Are you removing any of the siding first (or other exterior trim that would expose the area around the window)? If so, you just nail it in with the nailing fin. If not you need to remove the nailing fin and fit it the old-fashioned way.
I'm not removing any siding. I'm just taking out the old windows and using the existing opening so the nailing flange won't do me any good. It was done all over the rest of the house, but they left one window undone. All the windows have the existing sill, trim, etc., but with the actual windows removed. I know I can fit the new one in, but I don't know how to attach it to the frame. Shims, screw and caulking?
Thanks
My experienc is to remove the fins in this case and shim along the sides close to the top and bottom and in the middle and then ron screws through the vinyl chanel. Do the same about 4 inches from the corners at the bottom rail. Do not fasten the top. Make sure the outside curb of the window is consistent with the type of trim you are using and it is not twisted. Be sure to check the plumbosity of both sides so the vent slides smoothly. Avon.
