Going to install a bay window where we have a picture window. Bay window has been ordered and received and now we see we screwed up on measuring the height!!! Tore the inside trim off and it seems as if there is a 1in. board under the window which we didnt account for. Also existing window has a sloped sill(to the outside) and bay has a straight sill. What do we do? Remove the 1 in. board and lower the bottom header? Also–should we place some sort of vapor/water protector around the cutout? The bay is vinyl. Any advice is mush appreciated.

Could we persuade you to hire a pro to handle this? I'm surprised you even tried to measure it yourselves. A simple rectangular window I might understand.
Thanks. We do all the work ourselves--have installed all the windows in our house--replacements.. and had to make adjustments here and there. Never thought the bay would be so tough!!! Thank God its the last one!! Linda
The proper way to do this is to drop the bottom 2x sill and reframe as necessary.
It might be easier to just take the sheetrock off, do the framing, and re-rock before you install the new window.
If I'm visualizing your existing window right, it's standard to have a sloped sill on windows, so any water will drain off.
I like using Vycor self-adhesive flashing to seal the sill and sides before setting windows.
And now you know why I remove the trim before ordering windows. <G>
Hi Shep---thanks for the help. Guess we live and learn. We replaced all the windows in our house but never dreamed the bay would be such a job!! Will let you know how we make out. Thanks again. Linda
A bay is one of the toughest types of windows to install.
If at all possible, I'd suggest removing some or all of the window sashes to make the unit lighter.
And make sure you support the window, either with cables or with brackets underneath.
