I have to install a ceiling fan where an existing ceiling light exists. The box is not ceiling fan rated and has to be replaced. The box has been nailed to side of a joist. I am looking for advice on how I can replace it without having to cut the sheet rock surrounding it.
I was thinking that I could knock it loose (up into the ceiling) and replace it with one of those boxes that are attached to a ratcheting bracket that tightens between the two joists. I cannot access the existing box from above because the bedroom above is finished with hardwood. My only option seems to be from below.
As usual, all advice is much appreciated.

The box on the bracket might slide to the end and in that case you have the answer. If it won't, you could still use the fan bracket box and patch the hole. Or you could move it to the C/L of the joist and get the fan box that surrounds the joist and patch that part of the hole that doesn't get covered.
