I have a client that wants me to install an out swing wood French door in place of an existing aluminum slider. All well and good, but the door that they decided on (a Cob door from S. California) has a sill that is oak on the inside and aluminum on the outside. The outside edge of the sill only comes flush with the outside of the door. This puts it flush with the frame also, except that the house is stucco and the stucco mold projects about 3/4 inch beyond the sill. In order to support the sill and give the lower ends of the stucco mold something to sit on, it seems like I should add a projecting sub sill that is beveled to shed water. Would this be right? I’d probably have to make one and screw it to the face of the house below the door frame.

*Maybe you should buy a sill cover, also called a sill nosing. Pemko sells them (also in S. Cal.), in almost any lengths. I put them under sills all the time. Come in lots of colors, too.Gary

I just completed an identical project but the Cobb sill was solid oak. When they delivered the pre-hung door, the oak was about 2" longer on each side so I could stucco right down to it. If yours is cut flush with the outside of the frame, I suggest you have then redo the threshold or do it yourself.
The door came fully preped including Q-Lon set in grooves plus trim-to-fit door sweeps. The only thing I had to add was a flat astrigal on the outside of the active foor. By the way, the 2 side lites are crank-out "windows" with interior screens. I sealed the oak with about 6 tubes of Topp 900 and then sealed the edge of the oak with clear polyurethane where if meets the mexican pavers.
*nice looking job , bill... what state is that in.. (the vegetation has me curious)
*b TVMDCThanks for your comments. It's in Pacific Palisades, CA, 3 miles from the ocean. PP is a part of Los Angeles.

Top RainBuster 900 is a elastomeric polycarbamate which remains flexible in below-freezing temps. It is used extensively in Los Angeles for window and door sets, stucco to wood, flashings, sheet metal, gutters, etc. Mfgr is Top Industrial, Van Nuys, CA, 1-800-473-1617.
