I’m currently replacing a staircase – both the treads and risers. The carpet has been pulled up and exposed the lumber below. My question is what is the best method for finishing the treads. Should I install them first and then apply the finish or cut everything to size, finish them, and then install the treads?

I finish them first.
It's easier to sand properly, less distortions from uneven sanding in corners, no hand-print residue... etc.
I can also seal the backsides and/or end-grains where apropos.
