Installing attic lighting-what does code say?
Hi. I’m installing lights in my attic. What does code say about routing wires? Can I drill holes thru the rafters and snake the romex thru them, up high near the apex? Or does it require armored cable? Or do I need to nail a 2 x 4 up and staple the romex to that? Etc….
I will also be installing a switch to control those lights right near my pull down attic stairs so as you come up into the attic you turn the lights on there.
Thanks to all in advance.

First, Do Not drill trusses.
The safest way is to staple your wire to running boards but they can be 1x lumber. I prefer using a screw gun to install these instead of hammering in nails.
I used "jelly jars" (porch type lights) in my attic so you would not be bumping into hot light bulbs or breaking them.
Install octagon boxes, running boards and wire them up. It is pretty easy now that it is cool up there.
It's a little tricky, and depends a bit on the inspector. The wire must be positioned so that it won't be stepped on or used to hang things on. If you're running wires up high probably the best approach is a 1x4 running board, nailed to the face of the joists, that you staple the wires to.
