Greetings,
Installing cedar shakes on wall.
Shakes on “homeslicker” drain mesh on tyvek v.b. on 1/2″ o.s.b.
For you experienced installers, (I’ve never installed or used the product)
1. What is the best method to attach shakes. (nails or staples or….) manual or gun
2. Keeping in mind that my client wants to install shakes himself. He will have access to my rotary laser level to keep level.
a. whats the easiest way to keep shakes even for a first time installer
run a chaulk line or a 3/4″ board or another method.
I’ll use this opportunity to learn how to install myself.
thanks,
eric

Shakes or shingles?

I had much the same problem a week ago.
Needed to know how to attach them to the wall, except I was using 60 minute paper. I was told to use nails with heads rather than my finishing nailer.
The roofer who came by the site said he uses a staple gun.
I used story poles and layout boards, looks great.
Now, pricing.
You do it: $50.00/hr. Homeowner does it with your tools: $500.00/hr.
Just think what happens when he sues you because your laser level blinded him/his kids/his dog, or your staple gun sent him to the hospital.
No thanks.

he past shake jobs I have done; I used a wide staple to attach them. The only time I used a nail with a head was for the last row at the top or other areas where the staple would show.
And they are still up there 5 years later.
Hope that helps.
