Is there an easy way (key word EASY, hahaha) to disguise the difference in ceiling height, when installing crown molding. I am installing moldings over kitchen cabinets and there is almost 1″ drop in ceiling in a +8’run into the corner. Using 4″ molding and I only have about a 3″ to 3 3/4″ space to fill in. The molding has a rise of 3″, and that should tell you the problem I’m haveing. Thanks very much people. Bill

Don't use crown molding?
Don't use crown molding? Crown will emphasize the ceiling height issue regardless of how you handle it.
If you have a really tall ceiling and you want the "crown look" you could install a picture rail, but it would need to be at least 10" below the ceiling to not highlight the height issues.
The more creative way to handle it is with literal camouflage. Use a somewhat busy and irregular pattern of wood pieces and maybe run it up onto the ceiling a bit.
Otherwise (and more practically), especially for such a narrow area, I'd just stick with a plain plaster soffit, maybe with a small (eg, 1") piece of trim at the top. Even a wood filler strip would emphasize the mismatch.
Bill,
I had the same problem with a cabinet install last summer. I wound up installing the crown on the cabinet faces. It actually looks better than up at the ceiling where it's difficult to see above/behind the cabs.

Thanks a lot people, But I like the idea of running the twisting the crowm molding a little and let it extend a little further out at the ceiling , therefore giving me more space between the cabinets and the bottom of the crown to disguise the whole thing, any comments on trying this trick? Again, thanks all of you for the taking the time to to try to help, Bill
Bill, is this crown going on the cabinet or on the wall above the cabs?
