I was thinking of singing up with the locale Lowes store to be an installer. Have any of you ever done installations for Lowes or any of the other large home stores? If you have can you tell me about it?

find out everything you need to provide them before approval and size/pay of typical jobs don't know how accurate, heard that PRIOR to hiring approval, sub has to up his insurance to high levels, get special coverage some trades the sub is the one going out and doing estimate lot of small jobs, low pay what i've heard, how true, don't know probably could do better on your own
My Sparky does Lowe's installs for 13 stores. He is kicking ####. I don't remember all the numbers, and he works 12+ hours a day (because the work is there for the taking) and he said he makes $1k/week. Do the math.
MERC.
Don't do it. I've been on both sides of it. the store will sell it wrong, order it wrong, and you get stuck with the problems. It's a good way to start if you need one simply because you can build a customer base. If you are already doing ok I wouldn't do it.
A grand a week sounds like pretty sorry money for an electrician. Are you sure you got your facts straight?
My Electrician makes well more than me and I would'nt get out of bed for that money and those hours
A grand a week would be good for an electrician if Lowes supplied all the tools, and the vehicle, and the driver, and he didn't have any education. Or expenses. Or sense of his own value.
Ah crap....My bad man...I should have "done the math".
$1k/day. Now were talking.
MERC.
Look in the business section for my recent experience with this idea. DanT
Okay DJ...now were talking!
I'd do that if I was an electrician.
blueWarning! Be cautious when taking any advice from me. Although I have a lifetime of framing experience, some of it is viewed as boogerin and not consistent with views of those who prefer to overbuild everything...including their own egos
Additionally, don't take any political advice from me. I'm just a parrot for the Republican talking points. I get all my news from Rush Limbaugh and Fox and Friends (they are funny...try them out)!
Dj, I understand that contractor rates are very different in regions, but I don't think I'd be happy working 60 hours for $1000 per week. IN fact, I'd be out of business in a very short time!
We currently would need $3510 to cover those hours and only if they were all billed as straight time!
Lowes sounds like they are hiring outside independent contractors at employee wages, and avoiding all the hassles and legalities of being an employer.
More power to them!

Run an "advanced search" on this exact topic over on the left hand side of your screen. This topic has been discussed at length here in the past (last time was just a few weeks ago). The general concensus has always been that it doesn't really pay in the long run. Way more aggravation than paychecks.
I can't go into a big box store to buy a box of screws without getting aggravated....why on earth would I want to sub contract for them?
Anyway, check out the previous threads and I'm sure you'll find the information you're looking for.
Good luck, whatever you decide.
