I’m rebuilding our front room window. We’re removing the existing glass…20 lights cutting out the horizontal crosspieces and leaving the tapered verticals. Over the verticals we are installing oak casements specially built ( think of a u-shape). We are then going to install 21-1/2″ x 73″ thermal glass inserts into the openings…5 altogether) with the vertical edges against the new oak casements. The tops will fit up against the existing wood and new oak ply. On the bottom we are setting 2 neoprene blocks and then covering the btm edge with 3/4 x 3/4 wood pieces. The inside edges will be sealed to the wood with glazing tape. On the inside we are installing 1/4 oak veneer ply over the base seat and across the top of the existing frame. The outside vertical members are going to have new pine pieces 2″ wide attached. Over the verticals and horizontals we plan on capping with white aluminum and caulking. Question: Is there anyone that can comment and head me off from making a mistake or add any good ideas ? Thanks. |

What is the sill made of ? What kind of caulk?
I would watch how you sealed the exterior. The 3/4 wooden piece at the sill will soon rot as there is no way to let it "breathe" or dry out. The pine trim covered by aluminum stock and caulked will also have a similat problem.
I've seen too many houses that had their 50+ year old windows wrapped by the vinyl siding team...only to find that ten years later they had turned to rot because of trapped water behind the caulked wrapping.
I would venture a reccomendation for the bottom of the IG panels....use an aluminum retainer clip to physically hold the glass and glue on a white PVC Qtr round moulding held above/ gapped at the sill to allow drainage/ventilation.
I also would consider priming and painting the exterior mulls...and dropping the wrap. Knowing that this will be a maintenance item.
Or maybe applying the wrap with "standoffs" and little or no caulk. especially wher they meet the sills.
When you seal the IG units in place.....use a caulk that is specifically rated for use on IG seam sealing materials. If they are not compatible the caulk may dissolve the IG seal and they will soon fail and cloud-up. Your glass supplier should be able to hand you the correct stuff.
Back in the late seventies I sold 50 IG patio door replacement panels (35"x74")to a DIY'er building his own envelope house to be used on the outer shell. They were installed with "off the shelf" silicone........less than two years later over half of the units had failed.....analysis showed incompatible caulk and seal materials.

Thanks for your ideas.
I'll be making sure the bottoms of the inserts are able to drain.
I'll also keep the aluminum capping on the verticals open at the bottom to ensure no moisture build-up and find out what the best caulking is to use to ensure compatability with the sealants.
Best regards.
