I am contemplating doing a backsplash in my kitchen using some leftover 12×12 granite tiles from another job. I have done a few floor installs using ceramic in the past, but the idea of putting something as heavy as granite in a vertical position makes me a little uneasy.
If I did the install, I would use backerboard over the existing wall. I was hoping someone could tell me what type of thinset or epoxy to use. I also need to know if I should use some kind of jig for keeping the tiles in place while they set. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
-Dave

cookshome,
Determine your tile layout, then set a ledger at the point where your second row of tile will start. Set the tile above the ledger first...it will keep the tile from sagging. When you're ready to set the first row, remove the ledger and go to work on the last row.
As far as adhesive, I'd look into a mastic. It is nice for vertical applications. A tile setter would have you use a mortar for the tile, either way, the ledger will keep things in place for you.
LOUB,
Thanks for the advice. Just the kind of thing I was looking for. Just one more thing if you have the time. Is the mastic going to be strong enough to hold the tiles in place while they set? I'm concerned about them trying to move away from the wall while the mastic sets, considering the weight.
Thanks again.

They have a special mastic or thinset for granite which is different from that used for regular ceramic tile.
Home Depot has the right stuff.
I don't think tiles will fall forward they want to slide down the wall but they are hard to pull away once they are embedded in the mastic.George Bush

cookshome,
The mastic holds better than you would think. Its made to grab quick, in fact, you'll have trouble prying a piece from the wall immediately after you set it. It takes a bit longer for curing, so be careful to read the manufacturer's instructions before removing your ledger. Good luck.
All,
That's great. Thanks for all of the help. I believe I can get this thing done pretty quickly now.
