What is the proper technque for installing 3/4 x 2 1/2 solid oak flooring on plywood sub floor? Should I use “L” cleats or staples. I have heard that when installing flooring on OSB you should use staples and plywood use “L” cleats. Can someone help me with this ?????????

Staples should do fine.

Either or. In the old days they hand nailed w/small smooth finish nails and those floors are still in service today. GW

The Port-a-nailer (PC) uses a t-nail that I have used and liked. It is a non -pneumatic nailer that seems pretty nice once you get your rythm.
I use my porta nailer with the ribbed nails. Never had a problem but I'd check in with "Luvditchburns". He's the floor man.

Well this blows my theory. I have a hardwood installer that uses staple on plywood and his floors seem to separate more than average. We control the humidy in our houses and a lot of my subs ask me why his floors are separating. So, I asked around a bit and there are some mixed ideas. Personally, I remodeled my own kitchen and I used ribbed "L" cleats and my flloors still (after 5 years) look great. Does anyboby know of a manufacture web site that recomends either or ???
thanks, P
Hi Prescott Im a hardwoodfloor contractor in syracuse and also had an outfit in N.C. The problems you are having with your fastners may not really be your fastners at all. For my reference material on subjects like this I always use NOFMA guidelines. They have an excellent website and they are the industrys standard. Sorry I dont have a link but my wife always takes care of our computor work and Im just learning.
thanks rusty, I will try and find them.

Nails and staples do the same job. More importantly for your sanity would be to rent or buy a pneumatic stapler/nailer. Just a tap will drive the florring home. Otherwises you'll be smashing the nailer and driving the nails in halfway. Considering the amount of hardware you'll be driving make it easy on yourself.
