I am installing several 4×8 sheets of Hardy panel as part of (simulated) board & batten siding. What is the best fastener to use with hardy panel? Screws or nails and what kind? Also, I am thinking that it will be necessary to put strapping up behind the panels for ventilation. What do you guys think?

http://www.mcfeelys.com/product.asp?pid=0812-CSS-M are the best if you are putting battens over them, if you are face nailing (visible heads) there are many siding nails available that would be sufficient for the job, swan products make a stainless siding nail and I've seen them at Lowes.
Hardie can be nailed with roofing nails effectivelytoo, and often is, but blind nailing is the norm there. Check out there website - its informative.
I installed about 50 sheets of the Hardi Panel on a Barn Renovation. I used Maze double dipped box nails (Available at Lowes or Menards). The heads are waffled to hold paint better then the normals flat heads. I drove the nails flush with the panel. When the barn had the finish coat of paint applied you could hardly notice the nails, you have to be standing right next to the siding to notice.
Got any pictures and details of the barn project?

The Barn was pretty much a complete redo. Bought a old run down farm a few years back and had a crazy idea of rebuiliding the old barn that was falling down. I still have a few things to finish, but started building a new house so haven't had a chance to finish yet. The only things that I really ended up saving was the block foundation wall and about 1/2 of the floor beams.
Very Nice.
Now you need to find a use for the silo.
Thanks for the info on the nails. I was wondering how to hide them.
