I recently purchased a hand shower and sliding bar for the “little” ones but had questions on how to correctly install the drop ell (this part replaces the standard shower head extension pipe for a more finished look).
My concerns are that the fit would be lose and allow leaks etc. Without removing the drywall on the closet that backs up to the shower I cannot figure out a way to be sure the installation is leakproof. Is there a good way to estimate the length of pipe required and if so what type would you use?
For now it is installed off the existing shower pipe extension and working fine but the ell was not cheap so I’d like to use it if possible. Obviously calling a plumber is an option but that would probably be pricey as well.

I am surprised no one has answered your question. I am not familiar with the design of the Moen but I just got home from a customer who had one of the Water Pick snake shower heads break off. The young husband was telling me it had stripped but it turns out that a few threads had broken off in the drop ear 90. He had no idea that the drop ell was not part of the shower head assy and had thrown the whole thing out. I had picked up a new ell and head assy based on what they said. Fortunately they had not taken the trash off and I saved them $20+ by reinstalling the old head.
I ended up using an awl and working the pieces out. I then put about four wraps of teflon tape and then put a good glob of teflon pipe seal (Rectorseal) as kind of a belt and suspenders approach. In their case you can pull the escutcheon out and check for leaks, I do not know with your Moen.
Hope this was some help.
