Installing Velux skylight on old shingle
Can someone help me with a question regarding installing a skylight?
I am installing a new Velux 104 skylight into an existing asphalt shingle roof. I have peeled back the shingles about a foot away from the opening. There are two layers of old shingle roof under the existing roof totaling about 1″ thickness between the batten wood roof and the underside of the newer shingles.
My question is this: Must the mounting brackets for the skylight be fastened directly to the wood under the shingles, or can I fasten them to the top of the layer of old shingles? I will be putting a layer of rain/ice flashing felt around the perimeter of the skylight, as well as the EDL metal flashing kit. I am reluctant to disrupt the old shingles if I can avoid it.
Thanks for any help,
Joe

I would probably remove just enough of the old ones to get the mounting hardware down to the wood. There might be reasons on site that make this difficult that I can't see but it is best because otherwise when you re-roof next time and tear it all down to the deck, the interior finish will be disrupted.
You really should be pealing shingles back further now to install the ice and water shield.
The head flashing might be hard to fit with the unit sitting down in a little lower but I think ir has enough allowance for that.
