Hi,
I’m in the process of remodeling a bathroom that has ceramic tiles on the walls that probably date back to the 1960’s. I tried busting some of the tile off with a hammer and pry bar, but they are really on tight. My question to the group is how can I apply wainscoting directly on top of the tile? What type of adhesive would you recommend? Thanks for any help or tips you maybe able to provide.

take em off, and redrywall, shimming the drywall out flush with the old plaster using maybe 1/4 inch plywood over the studs
nailing the new wall material though the old ceramic will be imposible
caulking is not a piece of trim
The homeowner special! LOL! I'm guess the sheet wainscoting? Try HD and go to caulking section, PL premium should have the kind you want.
Why don't you get a saw and recipurcating saw, cut the drywall above the final tiles (you can use the tile as a guide) then remove the drywall, and the tiles (you should get a 50lb sledge and dust mask because demo is not pretty!)
After you clean up and remove all the nails (preparation is key).
1. shim out all the studs using 3/8" x 1-1/2" x? cdx ply.
2. 3/8 or 1/2" drywall (measure the stud w/ply. to the outside of the plaster to find the measurement) you can tape and mud the seams if you want.
3. Then final you can nail and glue the sheets of wainscoting/trim
The problem is for gluing the wainscoting to the tiles is you can't nail it, unless you ply press while the adhesive dries!
That's my opinion
