I am installing a walnut floor over radiant heat (staple up). On the other areas of the house without radiant heat I used tar paper (15#) before laying the wood floor. Is this needed in the areas with radiant? I am afraid when the radiant is on the tar paper will emit an odor.

We use red rosin paper instead of tar paper with good results in that application.

I never use tar paper unless over a crawl space. I did 1200 square feet 3/4 oak over staple up radiant, worked great. I used 1 1/2 inch nails instead of the usual 2 inch, did not want to take a chance poking the pex.
