Instant Set Lead Flange Replacement
Has anyone used an Instant Set water closet ring? It’s a way to deal with an old lead flange. I’m trying to advise a galpal who lives out in the boonies and would rather not have to get a plumber out with a four-wheel cutter to take out the cast pipe. I thought this might be the answer, but i’ve no personal experience with them and was hoping a pro could say Y or N about them. (The floor is wood, btw.)

Oh I have set a few------- probably more than you have posts on bt <g>
Anyways they are great, but---- oh yeah that dreaded but
They usually don't work with a "lead" closet bend
If you have CI there then no problem.
& if it's a lead bend then here's what ya do.
Where the lead bend meets the CI fitting there is a brass ferrul at that point.
You can cut away the lead & expose the brass then use a rubber no hub coupling on the brass ferrul.
Then you can transition to CI or abs & even pvc.
& yes instant flange will work on abs & pvc.

I've asked my friend* to e me pix of the job bec i can't tell from her description if the closet bend is cast or lead. I didn't know about the brass ferrule - a good heads-up. If she transitions to PVC, i imagine she'll just stick on a PVC flange in that case.
Thanks, PB and Sphere....my worries about "lousy Internet advice" are over! When i first did a search here on "lead flange" i got zero returns. I checked spelling...still zero returns. I changed it to "flange lead"and got some returns, but nothing about this gizmo which i'd read about on Gardenweb.

They work great---Rock solid.
I've used 2 of them to replace broken flanges, slab on grade, very little chipping of the conc. to get it to fit.
Had trouble finding the product at 1st. Both commercial supply houses in town tried to sell me a "twist&set"-- goes inside the C.I. reducing the opening and just a rubber gasket/grommet to hold it in place. Finally found it at Lowe's for about 12 bucks---I bought extras for inventory.
I'll tell her about Lowe's. She's about two hours out of Spokane, but i think there's a closer, old-time store that might be able to order one for her. Only $12....whoda thunk it??
The company makes one with an offset which might help her with a wall that's pushing her toilet forward, though i suspect that's a bit rarer to find.
Spokane?
Oh yes for all the NON North Wetters it is pronounced Spo can.
Anyways there is a ferguson & a Keller in & around Spokane + Northern Idaho & Walla Walla depending on 2hrs in whichever direction."I'm here to chew bubble gum & kick azz, & I'm all out of bubble gum" Rowdy Roddy Piper
She's up 395 near Colville, then way out there on some dirt roads where she has a hundred acres or so overlooking the Columbia. Amazing land, but the house was cobbled together from three buildings that were moved there so she's gotten quite an education. She's recd some old-timey info from some old-timey stores up there, and sometimes that's fine, but a gal just doesn't want to deal with lead and oakum.
Just pulled a spare that I got from Lowes off the shelf. It's made by "Plumbest"
It looks identical to the "instaset" right down to the baby blue color.-Made in China--go figure. So your friend may be able to expand her search for the knock off brand and have an easier time locating it.
As this is her only toilet, i would imagine that finding it will possibly be worth the long trip to town sooner than later, LOL!
Actually, it's not my only toilet, but the relic downstairs is even older......
Thanks for all the help! I'll really have to think about it a long time before getting up the guts to go downstairs below that thing, and trying to knock it off, with all the cobwebs and debris raining down upon me.
Indoor plumbing? Pros & cons. An outhouse would be so much easier....in summer!
So...you found the breadcrumbs...The only way out is through. Better hurry...winter's coming. <G>
I'm dreamin' of - an outhouse with a Russian stove inside........
With a 6' soaker tub. Add a man at the other end and a basket for the candy wrappers.
