I recently bought a condom at the ocean on the East Coast that is over a common, open-air garage. The building we are in is all concrete construction, including floors and ceiling. Unfortunately, in the winter the floor is uninsulated and freezing to the point that we are huddled against the fireplace most of the time for warmth. The heat pump in the unit struggles valiantly but poorly to make the place warm.
To combat this, I figured I could have electric radiant panels installed at strategic locations around the unit and maybe rigid foam insulation installed on the ceiling of the garage (with condom association approval). However, a contractor told me I would be better off just laying a thin insulating board under the carpeting.
I suppose if I did this, I might as well also install electric radiant
floor heating. However, I wasn’t planning on replacing the carpeting and vinyl floors so soon, thinking the garage ceiling insulation would be an economical solution. I realize the individual radiant panels wouldn’t do anything about the cold floor, but I figured they could supplement the heat pump.
Anyone have any ideas?
