insulation method so I can keep these..?
rafters partially exposed? Hoping to keep at least a reveal of these when I convert this space into a work area for DW. Most are ~6×6, and the ridge beam 7+x7+. Planning on rock lathe/one-coat plaster, so about 3/4″ there. Located southern NH, and I believe local code calls for r-30/38 in ceiling, not sure why the 2 levels given. Roof is relatively new, so raising that not especially appealing, but I think it would be a shame to cover these over. Previously there had been a false fiberboard ceiling in place. I just finished removing the last of the framing that was there.
Everything I’ve seen/read makes me think not possible to do without raising the roof but that’s why I’m throwing out the question.

ferget the code, you are grandfathererd in there..5'' of rigid foam will get ya r25..got the same kinda deal in my log home upstairs. Make it in layers, and ONE of them foil faced if ya can, I put a foilfaced compressed fiberglass ductboard towards the steel roof, with airspace, and a foil face towards the living area behind the sheet rock..in my case tho' I have 4'' of duct board at. R4.3 and 2'' foam at R10 with SR I might be at R30.

Thanks. Didn't realize I'd be able to get grandfathered in, and since not gonna be full-time occupied r-25 plus or minus a little bit seems alright.
The foil facded foam runs R-7.2/inch. The blue Dow extruded is R-5/inch.
The trick here will be to seal tight to the beams and at seams with spray foam from cans and tape. You do not want moisture leaking through to condense on the outside edges.
you are grandfather in many codes, but soem times there are particular "if"s added that make it depend on whether it is your own house or if you are a professional, and if the percentage of work is above a certain amount, in dollars or square feet. Also, sometimes there are "seasonal" residences that are exempt, or used to be anyhow.

Sealing to the beams is gonna be a pain, you're right about that. It's lasted a long time already and going to do everything to keep the condensation down to a minimum at worst. The local BI is a pretty good guy, so I'm not too afraid of running afoul of anything there. Just didn't want to be too far out in left field with this. Thanks.
I wouldn't touch anything I didn't have to, inside. What a workplace!
Can you lift the steel roofing and insulate under it?
SPHERE's got the steel roofing on a cabin. I've got newish 30yr archy shingles and new ply sheathing over the old. The roofline's cut on one end by an ell btw the main house and this barn, so raising the roof for insulation is a little more involved. And thanks, this is gonna be a great work area.
