I’m having trouble getting general liability insurance , since I let my last policy drop a few years ago, along with a partner , 3 employees, and all the hassle that went with ’em. They feel that I’ll just drop the policy again after the present job is done. The architect is insisting on it. I’ve been working mostly without contracts, schedules, etc for a long time, but now its all about negotiating time lines, start/end dates, estimates,, on and on. Anyway I understand that some companies will write a policy for just one job, ? I’m wondering if we could get a rider on the owner’s homeowner policy… I’m happy to keep a permenant policy, if I can get one. Any advice would be most welcome Thanks, John

Have you tried your Auto or Home ins co?
I'd be uncomfortable tagging on to a clients Ins. It just reeks of trouble if in the event of a claim. Which MAY kick in whether or NOT you have your own, or exceed your limits of coverage.
I have 1million liabilty as a separate entity to just my business, in addition to MY HO policy that will cover MY liabilty to persons on my property, as workers or not, and the Liabilty is thru a different agent/co than the HO policy I carry.
Might be your state or sumpthin, I have dropped my Gen Liabilty at least 4 times in 2 states, and re-instated as many times , I don't get what the deal is you are facing. My latest Co. was more than willing to cover me.
I'd keep shopping around. Sounds like your agent is applying AUTO rules ( high risk) to a simple Gen Liability construction scenario.

If you fill out your profile, there may be someone in your area who could point you to an agent.
Hows your FICO and what state are you in?
FICO means alot when it comes to insurance and so does a track record. I ny about 5 years ago almost all the major ins, co's stopped writing GL.
That left us to purchase it from out of state companies that were unregulated because they were out of state.
The day I got a quote for over 5g for something I used to pay less than a thousand for I quit the bus and went to work for someone.

jme... you sound like your were burned out in your last partnership
but now it's time to get serious again... are you going to run a business or are you going to run a hobby ?
there are all kinds of agents in your state who specialize in contractors... find one and get on board
insurance should be just another cost of doing business, it should be a permanent part of your overhead.. everytime you let a policy lapse ... or cancel ...you create coverage problems for yourself and the insurance companies
for example: suppose you get sued 3 years after you finish a job... who covers ?.. depends on the language of your policy ( like " completed operations " )
find a good agent and convince them that you are in for the long haul
