I’m just completing a sweet little art/guest studio on my property. The floor is the last thing needing attention and I’m wondering about something I saw decades ago and have never heard of since: floating tiles. Here’s the picture: I’ve got a little 4 1/2 X 7 foot entry way that’s blocked in by walls on three sides and by a bump-up into the main living area on the fourth side. I’m thinking of placing tiles in this completely hemmed in area and just letting them float — no grout and no mortar. I remember encountering this once and being told that it was a Japanese style … the tiles sort of ‘crackle and chink’ as you walk across them .. but being hemmed in on all sides have no way of ‘creeping’.
Has anyone else here ever heard of this?(I swear I didn’t dream it!) .. and if so .. any tips on whether or not to use spacers … or anything else that might be worth knowing? Thanks in advance .. this has got to be one of the most productively helpfull groups on the WWW !
