We are building a house in which we are separating the kitchen from the family room with half walls on either side with short columns above the half walls. Does anyone know a good source for such short columns, preferably Tuscan style, stainable?

Eric,
Pick up a copy of FHB, and you'll find many suppliers of columns. Also, most lumber yards have a source for them. Usually they are available in a great range of diameters and lengths.
I've never seen Tuscan columns in the catalogs, but Doric should be easy.

Wood or painted? for painted try outwater.com - the polyester or some such composite - suprisingly nice and solid feeling and sounding.
*Eric:I am in the same position as you are - need 1/2 height columns for an interior application. I have researched, and shopped to no avail. A few manufactures have 6', but no 4'. If I remember, as Bill suggests, outwater did have one 1/2 height, but it was not of the style or height that I needed.I also had my lumber yard look for some for me.The best I can come up with is to buy an 8' and cut id down. Since architecturally correct columns are tapered, this causes a problem, namely that the capitol (top piece) or the plinth (base) may not fit right, depending on which end you cut off. It also causes a problem if you want fluted columns. I did find some that I could cut down at Home whatever, but couldn't be picky about capitol style, etc. Let me know what you find out. Here's a starting point: http://www.archpro.com/column.html
